There, academics warn against moral panic, pointing out that older generations have long been uneasy with new media. Novels used to be criticized for igniting young people’s passions. Identity reshaping was attributed to social media. Another chapter in that pattern might be AI companions.
But this time, something feels different. AI companions are responsive entities that mimic care while maximizing engagement; they are more than just content. It seems as though students are struggling with a new kind of relationship that is neither wholly fictional nor wholly real as they debate this in candlelit common areas.
A formal policy has not yet been announced by university administrators. Any future regulation may concentrate on usage recommendations rather than a complete ban. Since smartphones are private and dorm walls are thick, enforcement would be difficult.
Even so, the discussion itself is a sign of significance. In a world full of algorithms, Oxford students are questioning whether intimacy should have limits. They are discussing love, and who or what gets to partake in it, in addition to academic integrity and data privacy.
